Vorlander, eserine başlarken felsefeye çeşitli tarihi dönemlerde verilen anlamları kısaca açıkladıktan sonra, bir felsefe tarihi yazarının taşıması gereken özelliklerden söz eder. Buna göre tarihçinin, eleştirel tarih metodunun ilkelerine uyarak olguları inceden inceye araştırması ve derinlemesine öğrenmesi gerekir. Olguların bu metoda uygun olarak özenle tespit edilmesinden sonra, artık onları tarihi bir tasvir meydana getirebilecek tarzda birleştirmek söz konusudur.
